READ This!

I used to hate reading. In high school, if there was a movie version of the book I had to read, I choose the movie. It didn’t occur to me back then that movies did have the exact same story line as the book it was based on. It was only after getting the results of a grade 12 English test that I learned there were sometimes major differences in the Hollywood version. My reading aversion was one of the main reasons I chose math as my degree… no reading there, just solid numbers and problems.

It wasn’t until I started studying and learning from highly successful people that I learned the one habit they all have in common… they all read a LOT of books. Reading was a daily routine for them and they would complete about a book a week. I soon adopted this habit and quickly expanded my knowledge.

During my free time, if I wasn’t reading, I was listening to audio books and audio programs. I turned my car into a university. Instead of listening to the radio in the car, I chose to learn. Instead of watching t.v. some nights, I chose to read. The knowledge I gained began setting me apart from others in my field. People drive on average of an hour a day. In one week that’s 7 hours of learning time. In a month that’s 30 dedicated hours to learning! Successful people use their time efficiently and they never stop learning.

I recently watched the Las Vegas show the Mentalist, with Gerry McCambridge. He is an amazing magician, entertainer and mentalist. At the end of the show I asked him “How did you learn how to do that?” his response, “I read a lot of books”.

Reading has become one of my favorite pastimes. But, some things do remain the same, I still would choose watching the movie vs. reading the book… I have watched the Harry Potter series but have never read any of the books. I hear I’m missing out but I’m too busy reading the other books that haven’t made it on the big screen yet!
