Boost Your Brain for Your Business
Did you know that sitting at your desk all day working is actually not as productive as you think? In fact, if you were to walk around and create movement in your body in the middle of the day you will actually have increased concentration and be better at solving problems.
Boost Your Brain for your Business
Last week I was on a call and someone told me that when they are on an important business call or want to make a sale in their business they get up from their chair and they talk on the phone standing up and walking around. The reason for this is because when you are standing vs. sitting you communicate in a different manner. When you stand as you are talking you are more confident and the conversation flows much easier.
My husband who is often on important calls, uses his cell phone and paces back and forth and walks around all over our house. I used to think he was a little strange for doing it until I started doing the research.
According to John Medina, molecular biologist and author of Brain Rules, the first rule to boosting your brain is exercise. When you are in motion a BDNF protein encourages proper growth in the brain and acts like “miracle growth”.
“Function BDNF acts on certain neurons of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, helping to support the survival of existing neurons, and encourage the growth and differentiation of new neurons and synapses. In the brain, it is active in the hippocampus, cortex, and basal forebrain areas vital to learning, memory, and higher thinking. BDNF itself is important for long-term memory.” – Wikipedia
Medina suggests that exercise aids in concentration and problem solving in the workplace.
Here are a few things you can do throughout the day to boost your brain power:
- Walk around while taking a phone call instead of sitting at your desk
- Have meetings on the go, walking or exercising
- Get up from your computer several times a day and walk around
- Have weights in your office and when stuck on solving a problem do some reps
- If you have a home office, play some Wii in the middle of the day
